Mission & Vision

The International Freight Drone’s mission is to lead the development of the freight drone industry through its creation of a freight drone capable of moving shipping containers and the supporting ecosystem that will provide a safe and efficient transportation method.

Currently, most freight is moved about in a country via trucks filled with goods and cargo down busy and in some cases poorly maintained roads. The freight in these trucks tends to be delayed or end up missing, especially where the road infrastructure is not in good shape.

International Freight Drone has created a plan for operating large autonomous drones within a country that will take the place of some of the trucks that are currently hauling freight between cities and open up markets in places where there is no road infrastructure.

The drone, to be designed and built by the Consortium, will have the following characteristics:

  • Able to lift a standard 40-foot, 20-foot or 10-foot shipping container.
  • Can travel at a height of 5000 feet above the surface
  • Can stay aloft with a 10-ton container to travel a distance over 430 miles (700 km).
  • Operates autonomously but can be overridden by a remote pilot.

For safety reasons, IFD will be negotiating and purchasing sky lanes from any government that is accepting of the drones to be used by drone owners. These sky lanes allow the safe passage of freight between cities or from towns and villages that have no road infrastructure.

At the end of each sky lane is a droneport where the drones will take-off and land. These are almost entirely robotic airports that will provide the safety and efficiency necessary to compete with the cost of shipping via truck. IFD will provide the systems and robotics required to run a droneport.

For the drones to fly and new markets to open the following items will  be done by IFD:

  • Establish best practices and business standards for the freight drone business.
  • Develop a set of basic regulations that a country will need to put into place before the drones can be introduced.
  • Work with insurance members within the Consortium to assure that owners of the drones and droneports are insured at a reasonable rate.
